Archie Midgley
About
Design Engineer
creating at the intersection of
form & function.
I'm Archie Midgley - a motivated engineer, pursuing a Masters degree in Design Engineering at Imperial College London, whilst serving as COO at a footwear startup - Shape Shoes.
Currently in my final year of study, I am driven to create products where form, function, and manufacturing logic work as one cohesive system.
My work spans product design, industrial design, and medical engineering - always with a focus on simplicity and purpose.
Experience
A London-based, 3D-printed footwear startup, designing shoes with major worldwide collaborations to tell artists' stories through physical design. Work spanning 3D-printed prototyping, iterative design for clients, and large-scale manufacturing operations.

A month at the Yoshida Research Group, building a wearable device driven by thin McKibben artificial muscles to actuate the index and middle fingers - controlled from an Arduino to play a piano melody or respond live to keyboard input.
Open experience ↗
Oxford-backed medical company developing a bio-structural gel to restore intervertebral disc degeneration and treat back pain. Tasked with designing the injection system tray and the user interface of the Pressure Monitoring System.

STEM educational platform leveraging AI education tools. After aiding initial company development through media posts and business direction, I co-designed an addictive, web-based mathematics game to test mental maths skills and promote website engagement.
Designing graphic screens for Newsnight studio; exploring layout, composition, and motion - pushing designs through to moving imagery aired live on BBC Newsnight.
Interior design studio with work spanning Harrods and Supreme. Tasked with creating initial design concepts for a new retail client in New York, and participated in the annual workshop event to design and manufacture a bespoke lighting system.
